The parking lot entrance at Route 31 & Meadow Lane and the outdoor drive-up book drop have reopened.

What to Expect / Qué esperar:

The library will be undergoing construction to replace plumbing and flooring.
During this time there will be increased noise and dust but the library will operate, business as usual, throughout the majority of the project.

If you need to access specific resources or have questions, library staff are happy to provide alternative solutions during construction. The Library continues to offer curbside services to pick up holds and other library materials.

Safety is our top priority during this project. We have taken additional steps to limit the dust and noise for our patrons. Noisier repairs will take place during the morning, before the library opens and the areas with repairs will be partitioned off to prevent contamination. Additional air treatment like HEPA and MERV-rated air filters will be implemented to maintain air quality throughout the project.

Project Background / Acerca del proyecto:

The Library closed in December 2024 to address an immediate sewage backup in the building, which uncovered more significant issues with those pipes. Since then, we have been planning this large replacement project and constantly monitoring the issues to address any backups proactively. The building's aging infrastructure needs to be addressed, as the sewer lines being replaced are original to the structure, over 50 years old, and failing. 

Upgrading the sewer system will improve the library's overall functionality and prevent future issues. The new carpet will also enhance the library's overall look, increase safety, reduce noise, and improve cleanliness.

La Biblioteca cerró en diciembre de 2024 para solucionar un desbordamiento inmediato de aguas residuales en el edificio, lo cual reveló problemas más graves con dichas tuberías. Desde entonces, hemos estado planificando este gran proyecto de reemplazo y monitoreando constantemente los problemas para abordar cualquier desbordamiento de forma proactiva. Mount Prospect and Waukegan Public Libraries are joining our consortium

On October 1, 2024, Mount Prospect Public Library and Waukegan Public Library will be the 30th and 31st libraries to join the consortium. Due to this exciting change, the library will experience some downtime from September 27, 2024 (starting after 5 pm) through Monday, September 30, 2024.  

Things to know

Online Catalog

1. The online catalog will be available during the downtime that is scheduled, however, the availability of items may differ from what is showing.
2. Patrons will not be able to place holds during the downtime. This is also true for the librarians as well.
3. Patrons will be able to access their accounts online but will not be able to pay their fines or fees.
4. Online registration for new cards will not be available.
5. Auto-renewal will be taken into account when items are checked out and projected to be returned during the downtime. More information to come.

Online Databases & Digital Media

1. Patrons will still be able to access Libby, hoopla, and Kanopy.
2. Patrons will be able to access the Premium Database subscriptions through the library's website (databases that are in-house use only will remain that way).

In the Library

1. Patrons will still be able to check out materials during the migration.
2. Patrons will not receive digital receipts during this time.
3. Materials returned between September 27th-30th will not be checked in until October 1st
4. Patrons will not be able to make payments for account charges (i.e. overdue charges, replacement costs)
5. The downtime will not affect the library's access to the internet or any of its services except for the ones listed here.

	The coloring pages were hand-drawn and assembled into a frame-by-frame animation. There are over 50 pages for patrons' color, giving each frame a unique artistic direction.   Las páginas para colorear fueron dibujadas a mano y ensambladas en una animación fotograma a fotograma. Welcome, Little One!

The McHenry Public Library and the Friends of the McHenry Public Library want to welcome your new baby to the world of reading! The library is here to assist you as your child's first teacher in giving your baby a head start in reading.

Research has found that babies who have parents who start sharing books with them early on develop better language skills and curiosity in the world around them. In addition, chlidren develop greater interest in the enjoyment of books and reading when they are introduced to books at an early age.

If you have a McHenry Public Library card, you can come to the Questions Desk and pick up your "Books for Baby" kit today!

The "Books for Baby" kit provides parents and caregivers early literacy tips, reading recommendations and local resources that can help you get your child started on the path of literacy.
