Keyword Search Engines:

Google, MSN Search,  HotBot, Teoma, WiseNut, AltaVista, AllTheWeb,  ExCite, and Lycos are all highly rated.

Search Engine Showdown compares and reviews many of these popular search tools.

Metacrawler, Monster Crawler, Metor, and ProFusion allow for "metasearching" with multiple search engines simultaneously, while DirectSearch and CompletePlanet specialize in searching "invisible" web databases that traditional tools miss.

Subject Category Directories:

Yahoo!, The Open Directory, Internet Public Library, and The Librarians' Index to the Internet are all great places to browse your way to information using various subject headings, just like an "old-fashioned" library card catalog! Most have keyword searching as well.

You can also try About, LookSmartThe WWW Virtual Library, or Illinois Clicks!, which contains sites given the thumbs-up by Illinois librarians.  Another good guide to useful websites is FirstFind, which is specially designed for low-literacy adults.
